Electricity is a major source of energy in the modern world. This comprehensive CD covers its history as an energy source, providing heat, light, sound and movement. It demonstrates how electricity can be generated through chemical reaction, how it can be stored in batteries, and how it can be put to use through electrical circuits. This publication provides a number of well structured experiments, tasks, and challenges to help students gain a broad understanding of electricity. The CD includes a portfolio for students to record their experiments.

Finding out about Static Electricity
Peter Sellwood
(illustration – Girl with wild hair)
Static electricity has been around since the very beginning of time, even our Stone Age predecessors knew of its existence - but they didn't call it that. They only knew it in its most violent form, thunder and lightning. Static electricity is an electric charge that becomes isolated, lightning is caused by a massive build-up of electricity that is looking for a pathways to the earth. In its less frightening form it can be generated by rubbing an inflated balloon on a woolen surface. The balloon becomes charged and will appear to be stuck to a wall while is charged with static electricity. There are many activities and experiments in this book.

Finding out about Magnetism
Peter Sellwood
(illustration – magnetic field)
Magnets are always interesting to young students. Toy shops usually sell them and many students have one from an early age. Most young students will already know that magnets attract metal objects before their school days begin. This CD provides information and fun challenges. Students find out that magnets have two poles, a North-seeking pole and a South-seeking pole. When suspended, they will align themselves with one end pointing North, and the other South. They see uses for this when studying how a compass works.
